A bike ride in Kibiji

Hi
Today we’ll explore Kibiji area!

Kibiji has a lot of historical sites like temples, shrines, and a massive Kofun (a tumulus) which was built in 5th century.

In addition, this area is known as a birthplace of a legendary hero ‘Momotaro’  who defeated Oni (a demon)  to help people, since there are some sites associated with him and Oni.

We set off for JR Bizen Ichinomiya station!
It takes 15min by train from JR Okayama station.

We’ll rent bicycles today as there is a cycle lane in Kibiji.
It must be fantastic to enjoy cycling and sightseeing in the same time

We rented bicycles at a small shop near Bizen Ichinomiya station.

It costs 400yen for 2hours, or 1000yen for 1day.
If you paid 1000yen, you could return it to other shops on the way to JR Soja station.

Now, we are ready to go

Few minutes after, we got to ‘Kibitsuhiko shrine’ where is sacred to a Shogun (a commander of a military) , Ookibitsuno mikoto.

He is considered a person who developed and ruled this area long ago.

We came across a huge stone lantern at the entrance
吉備路1110
It’s the highest stone lantern in Japan, it’s almost 11m in hight.
How magnificent it is!

Here is called ‘Temizu sha’, a place to cleanse your body.
吉備路1112 吉備路1113
Yes, you are supposed to clean your body when you enter the shrine
You should wash your left hand first, then wash your right hand, and rinse your mouth at last.

These items are called ‘Ema’ which are for writing your wishes on it.
吉備路1114 吉備路1121
Oh, I found the one shaped like a peach

This is a good-luck charm for school children!
 吉備路1122
It helps them to learn quickly and to be successful in their exams! So lovely

This is ‘Omikuji’ which tells you your fortunes.
吉備路1123
I'm fond of it, since this shape is so unique! It imitates peaches again

As you can see, there are red ‘Torii (an archway) lining up.
吉備路1131
Torii divides the sanctuary from the world of human being.

Can you guess who he is!?
吉備路1139
He is ‘Momotaro’, a legendary hero of Okayama.
His servant, a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant are following him.
According to legend, they fought with Momotaro against Oni

After a ten-minute ride, ‘Kibitsu shrine’ appeared around the corner!
吉備路1143

There is a red-lacquered gate on the way to the main shrine.
 吉備路1153
This lacquer is called ‘Ninuri’, it’s made of metal.
This vivid red expresses the greatest respect for God and it’s believed that the colour averts evil.
What’s more, this lacquer has a function of protecting the building from damages by insects and decay.

This is the corridor to the sanctuary.
吉備路1168
吉備路1162
It took us by surprise as it’s about 400m long Just amazing

In the middle of the corridor, there is a rest area.
吉備路1175
We were impressed by the beauty of the small garden!

Oh, who are they!?
吉備路1177
They are Oni (a demon) … but they look nice and friendly
They might say ‘Why don’t you sit on me if you like!’, I imagined…

This shrine is famous for a ritual, ‘Narukama shinji’.
鳴窯神事
It’s one of Shinto rituals, the sound of a heated kettle tells you your fortune.

At the ceremony, you’ll see an iron kettle in the middle of the room which is set over the fire
鳴窯神事2
After a while, it makes the sound...
Then, the sound offers the answer to your prayer

You need to book a seat until 2pm on that day if you’d like to attend the ceremony (price: 3000yen, close: Fridays).

In my case, I prayed for good health.
According to the sound of the kettle… my prayer will be answered

This is the main shrine.
吉備路1184

What makes this building outstanding is the shape of the roof.
吉備路1183
This roof is named ‘Hiyoku irimoya zukuri’, and it’s designated as a national treasure. As you can see, there are two roofs jointed together, and this sort of structure is extremely rare.
It gives feelings of the majesty and elegance

You should try English ‘Omikuji’ which is set in the front of the main shrine!
吉備路1186
It’s easy to see what the future holds
Just shake the box, then you’ll get a piece of paper which tells your fortune.

Each word which is written on the paper shows how lucky you are gonna be.
For instance, if you’ve got ‘Dai kichi’, it means you are incredibly lucky
Whereas, if you’ve got ‘Kyo’, be warned… you might get into a trouble in near future

That’s all for now!

I’ll report rest of the trip next time We are going to visit Kofun (a tumulus) and Bicchu kokubunji temple.

See you soon
