It originally used to let customers know that the brewer has freshly-brewed sake.
It tend to be hung at the entrance during the winter.

By the way, it must be fun if you pay attention to the traditional architectural style

This wall is called ‘Namako kabe’.

Can you see black tiles on the wall? They are protecting the house from the fire
Beseides that, there are various ways of layout.

People also plastered on the tiles to prevent their houses from being soaked because of heavy rain or floods

This is ‘Kurashiki goushi’.

It protected people’s privacy since neighbors and passerby weren’t able to see inside.
Furthermore, it was designed to let in the sunlight

We arrived at ‘Achi shrine’ Can you see stone stairs?
美観地区0540 美観地区1040323
There are 88 steps, since it is considered that this number brings good luck in Japan.

Apart from that, each step was made of a large slab of rock.
It tells us how this area was wealthy at that time since these kind of building materials were costly

We found some old buildings which have been renovated as shops.

The name of this shop is ‘BAISTONE’.

It sells bags and other stuff which made from ‘Kurashiki hanpu (sailcloth).
These bags are strong and stylish as well.

Apparently, the most popular one is a tote bag.

My favorite is this one, it’s a bag for a wine bottle
