Hi
We visited Inbe area in Bizen City where is famous for ‘Bizen pottery’ .

Bizen pottery has a history of 1000 years!

This pottery doesn’t have a process of glazing.
It is made of good clay from local area、then it is baked in the kiln for 10-14 days.

The pattern on the surface of the pottery was drawn by the fire, a shower of sparks and falling ashes in the kiln. These factors give the pottery powerful and deep effect.

This is JR Inbe station.
Inbe465
It takes about 40min by train from Okayama station.
You can look around without transport as potteries and shops are concentrated around the station

There is a gallery on the second floor of Inbe station.

More than 2000 of Bizen potteries are exhibited here. Futhermore, you can buy them if you like

We happened to find the exhibition of a young potter!

This is one of the tools for the tea ceremony, ‘Mizusasi (a pitcher).

He made it with several kind of clay that have different colours to express a texture of wood. Such a wonderful idea

You need to book by phone or on the website in advance if you want to join the lesson.
The price depends on what you make, but normally it’s around 2625yen.
It takes 60-90 min to finish.

First, the instructor explained us how to make Bizen pottery.
Inbe212
Generally instructors speak Japanese, though there are some English speakers at the pottery as well.
So, If you are in need of English instructions, you should ask about it when you book the lesson.

We decided to make a mug without a handle!
Well, for a kick off, you need to widen clay with your thumbs.

Then, shape clay little by little.
Inbe252
The pottery become smaller after bake it, so you need to make it a bit bigger than the size you want

We found it difficult to make the side smooth…
Inbe263 Inbe271
According to the instructor, the shape doesn’t need to be perfect since it would be charming if it has an irregular shape.
I feel relieved now…

It’s the final stage!

We made inside smooth with a spatula, then cut off the bottom from the base.
At last, signed on the bottom. We did it

It's far better than I expected! Fabulous

This is the kiln, it’s called ‘Nobori gama’.
Inbe285 Inbe287
It's about 10 meters long, and it needs ‘Akamatsu (Japanese red pine)’  for fuel.
The temperature reaches around 1200 degrees

You are likely to receive your pottery in 3-6 months. You can visit here to pick it up or you can ask staff to send it to your house (you need to pay for that).

We swung by the shop next to the pottery.
Oh, we found something unusual
Inbe198
This is Bizen pottery nemeplates.
You can ask the shop to engrave the name or words you like.
It could be a nice souvenir
