Speaking of the museum, it was carried in ‘Michelin Green Guide Japon’ before, and it has got 1star out of 4.
This museum possesses 3000 of his work, and it exhibits 100 of them such as paintings, sketches, and woodblock prints.

Yumeji was born in Oku Gun of Okayama in 1884.
He became a hugely popular artist when he released his first autobiography with his paintings in 1907Some paintings were inspired by his beautiful wife, Tamaki, who had big and sorrowful eyes

As a matter of fact, women in his paintings are called ‘Yumeji beauty’, they have distinguishing features, white skin, big eyes, and sorrowful smile like Tamaki.

He became a painter of established reputation in his twenties, then he extended the area of his work.
He was known as a designer and a poet as well as a painter.

He succeeded in his career, however, his life was full of ups and downs
He divorced Tamaki when he was 26, he lost his girlfriend Hikono when he was 37, and
he started having a serious relationship with Oyou when he was 38.

These women greatly affected his mind and his sense of art.
And as well as that, his affectionate mother and his sister Matsuka formed his view of women.

This is ‘Kamogawa'.

There is a Maiko (geisha) standing near Kamogawa (Kamo river) in Kyoto.
The combination of her white and elegant neck, a red neckband, and black Obi (belt) is impressive

This is ‘Doji’.

We can see children playing under tsubaki (camellia) tree.
I got an impression that he drew this paintings remembering his childhood. Tsubaki is the one of his favorite flowers, and he often drew it.

This is ‘Aki no ikoi’.

A lively composition grabs our attention at first.
Look at the woman in Kimono who is holding a blue umbrella. This fashion is the mixture of Japanese and Western style.
This painting was drawn in 1920, at that time, this kind of fashion was quite popular.

‘Tatsuta hime’
立田姫

Tatsuta hime in red Kimono is the Goddess of a good harvest.
She is Yumeji’s ideal woman and this painting is the one of his greatest masterpieces.

She is standing with her back turned, but we can see her face.
This composition is unnatural, however, it makes the painting mysterious and elegant.

Yumeji quoted a poem by Chinese poet, Toho.
It says ‘Rice wasn’t affordable for people last year. Nevertheless, the price of rice has dropped and it puts pressure on farmers this year.’
This poem expresses his sympathy and consideration for poor people.

You can take a rest at a café ‘Matsuka’. It’s next to the entrance.
