A castle on a high rocky mountain, Kinojyo

Hi

Today we visited Kinojyo (a demon’s castle) , an ancient castle in Soja City.

It’s said that this castle was built about 1300years ago to protect this area against the attack by foreign militaries.
For that reason, the castle was built on a high mountain, about 400-600m in height.
However, the history of it is surrounded by mystery

It takes about 1hour from the centre of Okayama City, if you go through a motorway. We left the motorway at Soja IC, and headed for ‘Kinojyo visitor centre’.

Kinojyo visitor centre is located halfway up the mountain, it’s about 400m from the top.

It exhibits some models and dioramas of the castle, and other documents.
You can also buy a map of the mountain (100yen) here.

By the way, do you know why this mountain and the castle are called Kinojyo (a demon’s castle)
There is a famous legend

Long time ago, this area used to be the state of Kibi. One day, a demon ‘Ura’ attacked this area.
People were frightened of him, and they called the mountain ‘Kinojyo’.

Look at this! This is a part of the castle wall.

It was built using ‘Hanchiku’ method, workers pushed the ground with a wooden sticks little by little so that the wall got harder.
It required many hands , and it must have been a big undertaking for workers
I can’t imagine how hard it was

This is ‘Shiki ishi (stone tiles)to strengthen the castle wall.

These tiles are hardly ever seen in Japanese ancient castles.

Most of ancient castles were built in western Japan. Now, about 30 of those castles remain.
As for Kinojyo, it’s said that the castle was built under the direction of Koran nobles who escaped from their country.

If you’ve got your back to Kinojyo visitor centre, you can see the entrance of the trail on the right side

There are walking sticks at the entrance which you can use free of charge.

Maybe you should use it, as the way is long and it’s a bit rough
