Hi

Today, we are going to visit ‘Fukiya furusato village’ in Takahashi City
This area remains old houses which were painted red

Fukiya
is located in the mountains, over 550 meters above sea level
The village is preserved as a culutural heritage of Okayama, and it’s one of popular tourist destinations in Okayama.

Fukiya used to belong to Edo bakufu (government) in Edo era.
It prospered from copper production as it had a big copper mine.

From the end of Edo era, this town started producing the pigment ‘Bengara (red iron oxide)’, and this business made the town wealthy.

By the way, do you know what ‘Bengara’ is?
It’s the red pigment which is used for painting ceramics, clothes, furniture, building etc.
Years ago, it was really rare and costly.

The buildings coated with Bengara are durable, since Bengara protects them from rust, decay and damage by insects.
For that reason, people used Bengara for their houses and other architecture.

In Fukiya, you can see houses which were painted red, showing the history of the village.

It takes about 2hours by car from the centre of Okayama City.
We left the motorway at Kayou IC.
If you take the train , please get off at Bicchu Takahashi station, and take a bus to Fukiya (3 buses a day).

We went through a winding road in the mountain, finally we arrived at Fukiya!

This is ‘Hirokane house’, known as a location for the film ‘Yatsuhaka mura’.

This house was built in Edo era by a squire, Motoharu Hirokane who run a copper mine.
He was also succeeded in Bengara business.

The house looks like a castle because of its size and a huge stone wall.
The main building of the house is 323 square meters in area, and the whole house is 2581 square meters in area.

An admission ticket costs 300 yen.
There are some tourists sites in Fukiya, so maybe you should buy an excursion ticket to save money.
It costs 850 yen, and you can enter 5 sites (Hirokane house, Sasaune kodo, Bengara kan, Kyodo kan, katayama house) with it.

This is Omoya (the main house) and its garden.

Red buildings go well with the green.

At that time, the master of the house used to live in the main house, and his servants would use other rooms in the garden.

Here is a kitchen in the main building.

This place used to be a copper mine, and now it’s opened to the public as remains.
You can discover some part of the mine, and you can learn how local people worked here.

The tunnel is 320 meters long, and it’s unbelievably deep

Don’t forget to put on a helmet before you enter!

Let’s go inside!

We walked along the tunnel, we found it really narrow and slippery.

My head might hit the ceiling if I didn’t wear a helmet!

After a five-munite walk, a big room appeared.

Workers were mining for copper here at the time.

I wonder that how workers dug such a big mountain without machines and how they carried such a large amount of copper.
It must have been tough on them

These are magnetic pyrites and chalcopyrite from the mine.

People used to produce Bengara (red iron oxide) from these ores.

We looked around and got out of the tunnel.

I found that the exit is located the middle of the mountain even though the tunnel started the bottom of the mountain!
It showed how the tunnel was long!
