Here is ‘Katayama house’.

Katayama family set up in business as a Bengara producer in 1759, and they had been producing Bengara for about 200 years.
This old house used to be their house and also Bengara factory.
You can see how their daily life was going and how they produced Bengara here.

This is Bengara made in Katayama factory.

In the picture on the left side, you can seeChanoma (a living room).
And in another photo, you can see ‘Okuzashiki (a parlour).

There are steps to upstairs.

This stair is extremely steep  Watch out when you go up!

This is a bed room for the master of Katayama family.
画像 129
It’s located the end of the first floor.
This room has a low ceiling, besides, every furniture looks simple and modest.
I guess they hid valuables in the chest over there

In the main building, there is Bengara museum.
画像 140
It exhibits tools which were used to produce Bengara.

In the factory, workers sorted Bengara in accord with the quality of them, then packed them.
Their clothes were coloured red because of Bengara everyday, so they used to take shower when they finished working

This house belonged to an owner of Bengara factory.

It shows his financial power

This is a small garden in the middle of the ground floor
There are movable panels to improve lightning  It's so unique!

There is a lattice in the window.
It had a function like the curtains, and it was a part of the interior decor as well.

This colour matches the atmosphere of the townscape.

We swung by a shop ‘Omiyage Asada’ to buy some souvenirs.
画像 179 画像 183
This shop has different kinds of Bengara products, so we had a range of choices

This is Bengara pottery.

This deep red colour attracted me

These are coasters made by Bengara paper(in the picture on the left side).

These are Kimono which were dyed Bengara red(in the picture on the right side). Bengara protects Kimono against fading and the damage by insects.

How did you find Fukiya
We were impressed with the beauty of an old-fashioned townscape
Actually, it’s a bit far from the centre of Okayama City... but it’s worth visiting!

The best location for taking a photo

This is Hirokane house that still remains the appearance it had before.

I took this photo in the main street of the village.
Red walls and roofs gave us retro feeling
