After having a bath,
we went to the museum of
Japanese giant salamander, ‘Oosanshouo’.

It’s a small animal similar to a lizard which lives on land and in the water, and it’s obviously the biggest Amphibian in the world

DSCN1778.jpg DSCN1782.jpg
They live only in Japan, China, and some parts in America.
It’s about 50-70cm long on average, its life span is more than 100 years

Shall we go inside?

A big something grabbed our attention at first
DSCN1785.jpg

This is a stuffed Japanese giant salamander which used to be kept in this museum before.

His name is Ryu, 160cm long, died at the age of 130

I’ve got a mixed feeling that they are ugly but cute… DSCN1790.jpg DSCN1791.jpg

Local people call them ‘Hanzaki (split in two)’, as it’s believed that they won’t die if it’s split. I don’t want to imagine the situation…

DSCN1797.jpg

As you can see, some fishes are swimming in the water tank.
Actually, they are food of
Oosanshouo. Poor thing…

Oosanshouo has been lived in Yubara since the old days.
This museum was established in 1971 to protect them.

You can see them swimming in the water, their photos, and specimens of them.

What’s more, there’s an unusual shrine next to the museum.

It’s sacred to Oosanshouo God, ‘Hanzaki daimyojin’.

Years ago, local people used to worship
Hanzaki (Oosanshouo).

There’s also a festival of Hanzaki in this town, it takes place on August 8th.

What surprised us the most is this

This is a carnival float, it’s decorated on the day of the festival,
and people parade around Yunogo spa pulling it.

Furthermore, it has a programme of painting a Koma, you can join it if you like (300yen).

This is a raccoon dog (Tanuki) Koma!
DSCN1847.jpg
It has a trick
You can take apart it, and you can spin each piece That’s cool!

We found a huge Koma, it’s 1.5m in height, 265kg in weight!

How can we play with it

A wide and varied selection of Koma entertained us
