A small island of art, Inujima

Hi

Today, we’ll visit an island, Inujima where is drawing attention as an art site  in Okayama City.

Inujima has a famous museum which reuses the remains of a copper refinery,
and art galleries set in the residential area.

You need to catch a boat to get to Inujima.

The boat, ‘Akebono-maru’ departs from Hoden Port.
It takes about one hour from the centre of Okayama City to the port by car

The number of the boat per day is limited, so you’d better check the timetable in advance.

We paid 300 yen for the boat, then, went on board

We arrived at Inujima Port in 10min.

We easily found a ‘Ticket center’ near the port.

You can buy the tickets for the museum ‘Inujima Art Project Seirensho’ and ‘Inujima Art House Project’ there.

The museum preserves and reuses a remains of a copper refinery on the island.

This copper refinery was built in 1909, however, it was closed down 10years later because of a slump in copper price.
What a pity…

We walked along a path to Seirensho (refinery) , there is a gate

Oh, can you see chimneys over there?

We waited for a while until the gate opened again (it opens every 15min)

Here is the ruin of the copper refinery

The factory was built using Karami bricks produced from the slag generated by the refining process.

It's telling us a history of the island.

Finally, we arrived at the museum

A few minute after we entered the museum, we caught the howl of the wind.
Apparently, it's a recorded sound of the wind roaring through a chimney, it 's also a part of the art

In fact, the chimney is keeping the temperature in the building moderate by circulating the warm/cool air.
What’s more, the air temperature is controlled by solar and geothermal.

As a result, it’s warm in winter, cool in summer inside the museum.
Faburous

The museum was designed by an architect Hiroshi Sambuichi.
It exhibits an art work by Yukinori Yabnagi, which uses Yukio Mishima (a well-known Japanese author) who sounded warnings over aspects of Japan's modernization, as a motif.

An art work 'Hero Dry Cell / Solar Rock' is set in five separate spaces.

Firstly, you’ll enter ‘The earth gallery’ ,which has mirrors in its long corridor so that you can see the sky in the front of you, and the sun behind you.

The next room is called ‘The energy hall’, it shows you an image of a big round object reflecting in the surface of the water.

My favorite is ‘Fujo-shitsu’, it has mirrors set facing each other so that you can see your reflection in both of them. What attracted me the most was mysterious red letters flowing in the mirrors…

It was beyond my imagination

Some parts of the building were covered with grass
I found it beautiful, it was full of atmosphere

This building used to be a power plant.

Here became the location for some films, such as ‘Tetsujin 28’, ‘Seibu keisatsu’. The majestic look of the building remainds me a cathedral
What do you think

We took a rest at ‘The Ticket Center Café’.

We ordered a cup of coffee (left), and a seasonable menu, bayberry soda (right).
