A town of denim, Kojima vol.2

We visit ‘Betty Smith Jeans Museum’ next

Betty Smith is a denim company founded in 1927. The museum was established to make Kojima jeans widely known

It takes about 15min by bike from Momotaro jeans Ajino shop.

At the entrance, I bumped into a figure which was modeled on an illustration by an American painter, Norman Rockwell

He is wearing a denim jacket and jeans by LEVI'S. They are really becoming on him

Some vintage jeans were displayed on the wall (the exhibition finished now).
I found a pair of jeans which was made about 100 yeas ago

It might be very valuable

This is a sewing machine which was made at the early 20th century.
It looks heavy… but elegant

What are those
画像 488
The stones are used to make stonewashed jeans.
Stone washing is a process used to give a newly made jeans a worn out appearance.
It also helps to increase the softness and flexibility of denim.
The outcome depends on the size and the hardness of stones

Speaking of Betty Smith, it’s famous for tailor-made jeans
The company launched this service in 2003, and soon after it attracted many denim fans in Japan

On the first floor of the museum, you can order your original jeans

There is a lot of choice of fabric for tailor-made jeans
In fact, you can choose one out of 50-60 types

I can't seem to make up my mind

What's more, you can decide almost every details of the jeans.
For instance, pockets, buttons, a patch, and the colour of stitches

Generally, a pair of jeans is sewn by several people.
However, the tailor-made jeans is sawn by one experienced artisan in order to improve the quality

Why don't you get one

Here is Denim Workshop.

You need to press the pedal of the machine

Well, this pedal is heavy…

Well done

You can overview Seto Ohashi bridge and Seto Inland Sea, and small islands

The view from here at sunset was designated ‘the 100 best sunset of Japan’

You can visit here by bike (it takes about 30min from JR Kojima station), or take a bus from JR Kojima station.
