Bicchu Matsuyama castle

Hi
Today we visit Takahashi City where is known as ‘little Kyoto’ in Okayama.

During the Kamakura era, Takahashi flourished as a castle town of the Bicchu Matsuyama clan.
It has many historic places such as Bicchu Matsuyama castle and samurai residences.

First, shall we head for Bicchu Matsuyama castle!?

This castle is built on a high mountain at 430 meters above sea level, which makes it the highest castle in Japan.
For that reason, people call it ‘the castle floating in the sky’.
Although the castle is not as large as most of the castles, its position on the mountaintop make it an impressive site!

The Castle was originally built in 1240 by Shigenobu Akibasaburou.
After that, it was enlarged in the 17th century.

It takes an hour and a half by car from centre of Okayama City
Or, 10min by car from JR Bicchu Takahashi station.

That’s the entrance of a mountain path to the castle!

Here we go!  We love trekking!

The sign says ‘Mind your step!       by the lord’.
It’s really kind of him

During walking up to the castle, I was really impressed with the beautiful view from the mountain.

I can imagine how it was tough to build a castle on such a high mountain at that time

Wow! Steep stairs!

We came across a part of the castle remains.
Let’s take a photo Hi, kimchee!

We have more 300m to the castle…

The way is too far!! We are nearly dying

This is the castle walls near Otemon gate, about 10m in height.

As you can see, the castle is located on the rocks. How beautiful it is

This is the wall surrounding the castle tower.

The wall has small holes for the defence, they are called ‘hazama’.
When the enemy attacked, soldiers shot arrows or fired guns from the holes

Finally, we got to the south gate which was restored in 1997

You can also see the castle tower behind the gate!

The castle tower was restored in 1683, and its original appearance remains pretty much intact.

It's also designated as an important cultural asset of Japan.

The castle offers us a cup of tea for free Thanks!

Here is the entrance of the castle tower.

We came across a hole on the wall.
Apparently, it’s for the defence as well, at the war, people were supposed to throw stones at enemies through the hole.

The tower is made of wood, two storied building.
Here is the ground floor.

If you pay attention to the detail of the design, you’ll see that the castle was well designed to withstand the attack.

(on the left) This is a window with bars. The bars made enemies unable to see inside.
On the other hand, people in the castle could see outside clearly.
(on the right) Narrow and steep stairs to prevent enemies going upstairs.

These facts are showing that the castle was designed as an impregnable fortress.

This room is called ‘Shozoku no ma’.

Here used to be a place for the lord and his family in case that they were attacked and they decided to hole up in the castle.
This room was carefully protected since the lord was supposed to kill himself when enemies won the war.
So, it was a kind of the sanctuary for samurai.

On the first floor, there’s a shrine which is sacred the castle god.

From the castle, we enjoyed the beautiful view of the coloured leaves

Then we came down the mountain to take a rest. Maybe we need something sweet
Oh, come to think of it, Takahasi City has a famous local sweet, ‘Yubeshi’!

This traditional sweet is made of Yuzu (citrus fruits) and rice.
Yuzu has been widely cultivated in this town from old times. So, it’s only fitting that people made sweets from Yuzu.

Here is ‘Enshudo’, a sweet shop which has a history of 300years.

I felt the scent of Yuzu when I put it in my mouth.
It’s sweet, but not too much I fell in love with it!

You should try it when you come to Takahashi!
