A historic castle town, Takahashi

Takahashi is a town surrounding Bicchu Matsuyama castle, and it has a history of 750 years.
It also remains some historic spots which show culture and people’s daily life at that time.

So, shall we visit some of them

This is the oldest church in Okayama, Takahashi Christ church
It takes about 3min on foot from Enshudo(a sweet shop)

This church was built in 1889, and it has designated as the important cultural asset of Okayama.
The most striking aspect of the building is a unique-shaped balcony.
You should check a bell on the tiled roof as well.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to see the exterior of the building because of the construction
Here is a photo taken before the construction started.

The door is always opened for visitors
The ground floor is a chapel.

The chapel had a warm, welcoming feel
We came across an antique wood-burning stove and old chairs
… it was full of the atmosphere

We happened to find this stone.
It’s called ‘the stone of persecution’.

When the church was built, Christianity wasn’t popular in Japan.

For that reason, people discriminated against Christians and oppressed them.
People even threw stones at the churchThis is one of those stones.

From the first floor, you can overlook whole chapel.

I felt calm, contained in the church

Then, we visited Raikyuji temple where is well known for its splendid garden
This temple dates back to the 14th century.

The garden was designed by a feudal load, Enshu Kobori (1579-1647).
It has received much acclaim

Enshu is a man of many talents
For instance, he was famous for his paintings, poetry, knowledge of the tea ceremony, and architectural designs.

The garden is filled with his keen sensitivity, tugging at the heartstrings of visitors

By the way, this is one of ‘Karesansui’ style gardens.
Karesansui is a typical Japanese garden, it imitates the look of a natural landscape (mountains, rivers and ponds) without using the water

As you can see, sand and stones are representing the flowing of water

Besides, trimmed bushes express mountains

Those stones and bushes look like small islands floating in the sea

An azalea bush over there is representing a big wave

It looks more glamorous from the middle of May to the beginning of June, since flowers blossom

Wow, it’s lovely

Can you see Atagoyama mountain over there
To my surprise, it’s also a part of the garden

In fact, this garden was designed to match the scenery of the surrounding neighbourhood, and this technique is called ‘shakkei’.
Shakkei makes the garden look spacious Also, it accentuates the beauty of the garden

This perfect garden overwhelmed me
It lived up to its reputation
