Enjoy modern art and nature in Nagi town vol.2
There’s an enormous ginkgo (icho) tree which is over 900years old
It’s the biggest tree in Okayama prefecture, about 45m high, with a girth of 12m.
We can’t miss it
The tree stands in Bodaiji temple which is located in the mountain of 600m high.
It takes about 12min by car from Nagisanrei Yamano eki.
I enjoyed walking in the temple watching vivid coloured leaves
Finally, the tree appeared in front of us
Such an awesome tree
Obviously, it’s extremely huge compared with Yan
Legend has it that Honen (a founder of Jodo shu Buddhism) planted this tree when he was a child.
What's more, there’s another tree which was divided from the main tree about 200years ago because of the heavy snow
You should come here in November if you’d like to see coloured leaves, or May is also good season to enjoy its young leaves and bright green colour
Bodaiji temple
Address: 1535 Koen, Nagi Town

Access: 20min by car from Tsuyama IC
We headed for a museum of fossils Nagi Vicarya museum.
It takes 30min by car from Bodaiji temple.
This big seashell is the landmark of the museum
Vicarya is a sort of shellfish which used to live in the tropics about 16 million years ago.
This museum not only exhibits fossils of Vicarya found in Nagi town but also offer you an experience of excavation
This is Vicarya
Apparently, Japan was formed by small islands at that time, and Nagi town used to be a seaside 16 million years ago.
Besides, the climate was hot and humid I could hardly imagine that
This diorama shows an ancient sea Vicarya used to live in this way.
We watched a video about Vicarya to learn more about it
Unfortunately, it didn't have English subtitles, though I suppose you can get it
According to the video, Vicarya have been found in some part of Japan, but most of them were found in Nagi town
There’s also something interesting outside
That’s the display of fossils in the stratum.
Furthermore, you can touch and feel real fossils
What surprised me the most was that we were able to dig out fossils here
You can rent the tools for 300yen.
Actually, those fossils were brought from other place with the stratum so that visitors can have such experience. It’s a nice idea
Besides, the fossils you find are going to be checked carefully by staff of the museum.
And if it’s rare or in good condition, it will be displayed in the museum with your name
It must be fun
We met some kids who were looking for fossils. They were engaged in it, having fun
So, why don’t you try it
Oh, I didn’t mention, but there’s a discount ticket for the museum and Nagi Museum of Contemporary Art (Nagi MOCA).
It costs 800yen (normally 1000yen), and you can enter both of them with this ticket
You can buy it at the museum
