Ikurado (Ikurado limestone cave)

We headed for Ikurado (Ikurado limestone cave) after eating soba.
It’s one of the most popular tourist sites in Okayama

It’s located near ‘Soba dojo Inakaya’, about 15min by car. You’ll see the big signboard of Ikurado on the way to there.
If you go there from Okayama City, it takes about 2 hours by car.

There is a free car park near Ikurado.
Although, there's another car park you have to pay.So, be careful

After 5munite-walk from the car park, you’ll see a green bridge and big stone engraved with ‘Ikurado’

There’s also a ticket office near the bridge

The entrance is opposite side of the river, green one.
So, let’s go

From the bridge, I saw a fantastic waterfall.
It’s called ‘Ikura no taki’. It falls down from 70m high!

It looked big even though I was far away from it.

Actually, it’s an artificial waterfall which was made in order to get the water out of the cave. However, it looks wonderful

Here’s an entrance.

Ikurado is a limestone cave which is 1200m long, and it’s designated as the natural monument of Okayama prefecture.
The cave has been widened by the groundwater over million years.
That sounds amazing

To my surprise, inside of the cave was just the right temperature.
Apparently, it’s kept around 15 degrees on average throughout the year.

Soon after we entered the cave, we saw a dynamic view of the rocks.

Oh, mind your step The floor is slippery because of the flowing water

As we went up, we came into some unique-shaped rocks.
The rocks in the limestone cave are classified into several types.

I’ll show you some of them.

Stalactite

The water containing lime runs off the roof, and it forms a long pointed piece of rock.
It’s called stalactite (tsurara-ishi).

Stalagmite
IMG_0596.jpg
The water drips down the stalactite, and it forms stalagmite.
It grows upwards from the floor.

Stone pillar

The rocks become bigger and longer little by little, and finally the stalactite and the stalagmite are merged.
It’s a stone pillar.

We saw many kinds of rocks besides those though, all of them were fascinating

Furthermore, each rock has a different name.

To be honest, I didn’t understand the connection between the name of the rock and its shape sometimes

Well… anyway.

This rock is named Mizugoromo (kimono for noh play)’.
It sounds beautiful and I like the shape as well

We were greatly impressed with the beauty of rocks

By the way, there was a small shrine called ‘shrine of Arisa’ next to the exit.
From what I’ve heard, it has a sad legend.

Once upon a time, there was a young couple, Arisa and Mosaku.

One day, a princess of the lord of Bicchu Matsuyama castle came by the village. Mosaku loved the princess at first sight, and he left the village to be with her.
Arisa felt heartbroken, then she jumped into Takahashi river and died.

People of the village felt very sorry for her and they built a shrine to comfort her soul.
Since then, Arisa has been worshipped and she’s believed to possess special powers to help people pair up romantically.

We enjoyed the mysterious atmosphere of the cave
Ikurado is the spot you can’t miss Please visit there someday.
