Manga Museum in Kawakami town

Kawakami town in Takahashi City is known as ‘a town of manga’.
There’s a unique museum of Manga, ‘Kibi Kawamkami fureai Manga Museum’.

It takes about 90min by car from the centre of Okayama City.
Or, 30min by bus from JR Bicchu Takahashi station then 5min walk from Jito bus stop.

On the way to the museum, we saw some funny statues of cartoon characters

By the way, why Kawakami town became ‘a town of manga’
It dates back to 1988.
Kawakami town was on the decline because of the aging of the rural population and depopulation at that time.
One day, the mayor of the town and a professor of Okayama University came up with the idea of using manga to make the situation better.

Since then, the town has been carrying projects which are linked to manga.
This museum is a part of that.

Now, the town is full of manga. We found many characters here and there

This is a mural at the entrance.

It’s drawn by a manga artist Tominaga Ichiro who is an honorary curator of the museum.

You can also find other characters around the museum or inside it…

Try finding out them when you visit here

So, why don’t we go inside
IMG_2155.jpg
Wow
At the moment, the museum has 120 thousand of manga books.
60 thousand of manga books are displayed in the library.
Of course, you can read all of them

You can hardly ever find a museum as much as specializes in manga like here.

These are rental manga books in 1950’s.
Manga books used to costly at that time, so most of children rented them.

They are really rare

What’s more, the museum has some manga books are from foreign countries.

Besides, this museum has a relaxing room where you can read manga lying on the carpet.
You can make yourself at home like this

By the way, Takahashi City is holding the manga competition every year.
Some manga which received awards are exhibited on the wall.
Each of them is unique and funny

You can also see manga by Tominaga Ichiro (an honorary curator of the museum).
I’m fond of them as well

I think I could spend a whole day here I bet you can have fun here as well

We came across ‘Manga Ebuta kan (gallery) near the museum.

‘Ebuta’ means a carnival float.
Here’s a gallery which exhibits carnival floats for ‘Manga Eburta festival’.
The festival takes place every August.

The festival started in 1995.
It’s modeled on the famous festival in Aomori prefecture,‘Nebuta festival’.
Both of them feature spectacular carnival floats.

However, as for Manga Ebuta festival, the carnival floats are all based on manga

Many Kawakami town citizens are involved in the building of these beautiful floats. Actually, it takes about 3month to build one float.

I’ll show you the carnival floats
